A St. Catharines man was airlifted to a Toronto hospital this morning after a car crashed into a tree in the east city.
Niagara Regional Police arrived at the car crash at Windward Street and Island Road around 2:40 a.m. to find the 19-year-old driver trapped in his vehicle.
Firefighters had to rescue the trapped man, who was flown to St. Michael's hospital in Toronto with serious injuries.
The passengers, a 20-year-old man, a 20 year-old woman and another 19-year-old man, were taken to St. Catharines hospital with "non-life-threatening injuries," police said.
Police investigators said in a release the driver had been driving northbound at "a high rate of speed" when he lost control of his red Dodge Stealth.
The car ended up against a large tree on a Windward Street property, the driver's side of the vehicle badly damaged.
Police believe speed and alcohol contributed to the crash.
Police are still investigating the collision and are asking witnesses to call 905-688-4111 ext. 5500.
