Donation gives local families a leg up

Posted 6 months ago

Some 92 households in St. Catharines and Thorold will be able to keep the lights on, the heat going and put food on the table thanks to a donation by Horizon Utilities.

The utility, through the United Way, has donated $15,000 to Community Care of St. Catharines and Thorold as part of an annual program called Winter Warmth.

Betty-Lou Souter, CEO of Community Care, said the money is donated by Horizon to the United Way, which distributes the money according to criteria set out by the utility.

"It enables us to help 92 families who are having a hard time making ends meet," she said. "We are able to identify people who need help maintaining their hydro, for example."

A spokeswoman for Horizon said 10 utility companies across Ontario are donating to agencies in their communities. Horizon operates in both St. Catharines and Hamilton and donated to the United Way in both communities. The company gave $15,000 to the United Way in St, Catharines and $35,000 to Hamilton.

A spokeswoman from the United Way did not return calls from the Standard Friday.

The people do need the money, but it shows we all overpay so they have extra money to give

Horizon gets the credit for having money to throw around, after getting that leach of a fee- retirement debt* out of every person who has a hydro bill. What a sad company, they are the lowest form of life.

It wont work ...far far to little far far to late!!! Im happy for the small amount of people it will help but its really insulting that they think they can throw around a few thousand dollars and think we are so ignorant that we may not notice the fact they are robbing us blind , with NO say or imput we must be dutifull in paying up or elsE !!! When we have no choice its like being held hostage !!!
